SCAA 2010 officers slate

Below is the 2010 slate for South Carolina Archival Association officers. Voting will take place at the business meeting during the Fall 2009 Conference at the SC State Archives.

Ashley Till for VP/President-elect
Ms. Till recently joined the staff of SC State’s Miller F. Whittaker Library as the coordinator of the Historical Collection, archivist, and instructor.
As the coordinator of the Historical Collection, Till acquires and processes materials for the historical collection, cultivates relationships that encourage the donation of materials and funding, arranges and oversees the transfer of documents and collections; initiates proposals to generate funding for the preservation of collections, and promotes the public interest and support of historical documents through workshops, correspondence, flyers, and other promotional and educational activities.
A native of Orangeburg, SC, Till attended Felton Laboratory on the campus of SC State and graduated from Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School.
Till received her bachelor of arts degree in Anthropology and Human Ecology from Emory University in Atlanta, GA; a master degree in Anthropology from Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, CO; and a master of arts degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC
While completing her degree in Anthropology, Till’s research included conducting fieldwork in South Africa on natural resource use and environmental, social and political constraints in an agricultural community two years after apartheid in South Africa ended.
Till serves on the Advocacy Committee for Orangeburg Consolidated Five and holds membership with several other civic organizations.

Alan Burns for Secretary
Mr. Burns is originally from Ogden, UT. He currently resides in Clemson, SC, where he is the Political Collections Archivist in Special Collections at Clemson University. He is married and has two sons. His wife, Linda, is a school teacher. He has a BS from Weber State University, an MA from Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis, and an MLS from Indiana University. He is a Certified Archivist. Alan is past Chair of the PALMCOP Board. He serves as Key Contact for SAA in South Carolina. He joined SCAA in 1999.

Jennifer Neal for Director
Ms. Neal received her B.A. from Brevard College in 2000. She worked in the Special Collections Library at the University of North Carolina – Asheville for her internship, where she was first exposed to the archival field. After five years of retail management and food and beverage, Jennifer decided to pursue her master’s degree in history. While working as an administrative assistant at College of Charleston, she enrolled as a part time graduate student. In November 2007 she attended her first CALM meeting, and in January 2008 she began volunteering at Avery Research Center to gain more experience in the archives. She is currently the Archives Technician at the Catholic Diocese of Charleston and will receive her MA in American History in December 2009. She has attended numerous conferences and workshops, including the 2009 Religious Archives Institute at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. She is an active member of SAA, ACDA (Association of Catholic Diocesan Archivists), SCAA, CALM, and PALMCOP. In August 2008, Jennifer was invited to join SAA’s student advisory committee of the records management roundtable and attended her first SAA conference in August 2009. She was also asked to co-chair the planning committee for CALM’s commemoration of Hurricane Hugo’s 20th Anniversary.

South Carolina Archival Association 2009 Election

Are you looking for an opportunity to enrich your professional goals and enhance your resume?

Do you know someone who has new and interesting ideas to share with South Carolina’s archival community?

Consider serving on the South Carolina Archival Association (SCAA) Executive Board. The SCAA Executive Board attends to the business of the SCAA as well as assists in planning one workshop and one conference per year. Serving on the board provides you and your institution input into activities that effect archival institutions statewide.

The SCAA 2009 Nominating Committee seeks candidates for three positions: Vice President/President Elect, Secretary and Director. Terms for newly elected officers will begin in January 2010.

Vice President/President Elect: This three year position (the third year is an ex-officio, non-voting position) is responsible, as vice-president, for planning the annual SCAA Social and the awards presentation at the annual meeting. The President plans and leads board meetings as well as the annual fall meeting. The Past President chairs the SCAA nominating committee.

Secretary: This two year position is responsible for taking minutes at all of the board meetings, the annual meeting and handling any correspondence.

Director: This two year position is responsible, with a co-Director, for planning one spring workshop and one fall conference per year.

The election will be held during the annual meeting at the fall conference on October 21, 2009.
